FOOD, BEDDING & TREATS

Small Animal Pellets & Hay:
We can use donations of food. We prefer to use Martin pellets for rabbits and guinea pigs, but of course we will accept any type of pellets you would like to donate. Fresh timothy and mixed grass hay is also needed.

Carrots & Lettuce:
Romaine lettuce and carrots is a big hit here for the critters and a small amount of lettuce is a daily must to keep everyone happy. We usually use about 2 to 3 heads of lettuce per day and about 3 bags of carrots a week!

Small Critter Bedding & Litter:
Another huge expense for the rescue is critter bedding and litter. Consider the number of animal we have in our care and you can just imagine the amount of bedding we go through!

Types of bedding & litter we use are:

  1. Natural wood shavings – (we do not use cedar). We use this for the rabbit’s litter boxes or sometimes even all through their cage if they are not litter box trained yet.
  2. Wood stove pellets – a great litter box substrate. These soak up the urine really well and are great for the longer haired animals where the shavings tend to get stuck in their fur.
  3. Yesterday’s News – another wonderful bedding and litter. It is super absorbent and it is also a really good for odor control.
  4. Shredded paper – we also can use shredded paper. Sometimes a local business will donate some shredded paper. This is great for bedding and litter boxes plus good for the birds cages. (not newpaper or any paper with dyes).

Small Animal Treats
Treat, treats and more treats! A favorite here for the critters is treat time! Twice a day, morning and night, they look forward to their treats. We use several different kinds but here are some of their favorite ones: Cheerios (Original, Honey Nut, Multi-Grain, Oat Cluster, Apple Cinnamon and Fruity), Shreddies and Mini Wheats (Original, Blueberry Muffin, Strawberry and Brown Sugar).

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

Donate Your Canadian Tire Money:
Save your canadian tire money and donate it to the rescue. We use this to buy supplies such as cleaners, paper towels, wood pellets for litter, etc. This is a great way for you to help the critters and an excellent way for us to cut cost of supplies.

Save Your Recyclables:
Save your recyclables and donate them to our rescue. We have an account set up at KC Recycling in Clarenville where you can drop off your recyclables and ask they be applied to Bird & Small Animal Rescue’s account. If you are not from this area we can arrange a drop off location if possible or you can cash them in yourself and send the money to the rescue!

Donation Cans:
We have Donation Cans at the following locations:

  • Sunrise Animal Hospital at 222 Park Avenue in Mount Pearl.
  • LabWest Vet Clinic in Labrador City, Labrador.
  • Community Vet Hospital in Clarenville.
  • The Barking Lot in CBS

OTHER SUPPLIES

New or Used Cages & Play Pens:
Donations of new or used cages are needed to house small animals and birds–the more houses, the more little critters we can help! We also use puppy play pens or x-pens to give the rabbits time out of there cages for exercise or so they can spend some time outside on warmer days!
We also need new or used bathroom mats, floor mats, pieces of carpet, pillows, etc. for the animals to sleep on. The rabbits love to have a comfortable place to sleep!

Litter Boxes:
Another thing we use a lot of is litter boxes. Every bunny has his or her own litter box. These are relatively inexpensive but where we need so many the cost does add up. We look for ones on sale or even the dollar store kind.

Critter Toys:
Another thing that most people wouldn’t think about is toys for the critters. Rabbits especially love to have toys that they can toss around and play with. You can buy actual rabbit toys or even shop in the baby section of your local store. Many baby toys are great for critters like toss rings, keys and rattles!

Cleaning Supplies:
Cleaning supplies and disinfectants are also a must for the rescue. We need bleach, dish liquid, cleaners, etc to keep up with the animals needs. We also use paper towels on a regular basis, another added expense! These supplies are used daily.

Printing Supplies:
An important part of rescue business includes the office work. Simple things like thank you cards and brochures are very important to the rescue imagine but does require some expense. There is also the expense of printing our lottery tickets! We need printer paper, ink (HP 60 Black & Color), and a nice cream or beige color card stock for thank you cards!
